Fashion Collections Big On Collaboration – The Orange County Register

28 May

Harlem’s Fashion Row (HFR) teamed up with McCafe to offer HBCU fashion students a chance of a lifetime. Yes, you read that right: HBCUs fashion students. If that caught you by surprise, you aren’t alone. Many HBCUs have great fashion departments and robust programs that people aren’t aware of. Though I did not attend an HBCU, as a former student of color in fashion merchandising, I can attest, the journey to a fashion career can feel lonely. Needless to say, I didn’t get the same industry support as my friends in medicine or accounting.

Friday’s Fashion Obsessions: Jennifer Lawrence and Lucy Hale

I guess it is part of our socialist heritage. Just look at H&M and IKEA – it has shaped us.’ Elmenbeck continues: ‘As a result, everyday fashion and “dressing down” was something Swedish designers became pioneers in. Both Acne and Cheap Monday designed clothes that a young generation could afford. Meaning Swedish fashion became recognised as cool.’ Organised by different trends, lesser-known names such as Ann-Sofie Back, Whyred, Dagmar, Rodebjer and Sandra Backlund are also prominently featured. On the rooftop of the museum, the next generation of designers are also on display, including Ida Klamborn, Erik Bjerkesjo and Naim Josefi – paving Swedish fashion’s future.

The collection hits stores in time for fall and will feature a mix of iconic Altuzarra silhouettes with designs created specifically for Target, according to a press release from the retailer. During the fall collections earlier this year, we fell deeply in love with Altuzarras color-blocked wrap coats and soft sophisticated download dresses; lets hope some of that style shows up in the aisles of Target.

The rise of the Swedish fashion phenomenon is charted in a new show in Stockholm | Fashion | Wallpaper* Magazine

After a brief step away from the red carpet scene, our fave BFF (in our minds, at least) has returned to our fashion radar. Jennifer Lawrence has been racking up some major fashion miles the past few weeks promoting X-Men: Days of Future Past, but this week she took a break from her hectic schedule to step out in style for the Cannes Film Festival Vanity Fair And Armani Party. Photo credit: Dave M. Benett/VF14/WireImage/Getty Images You all know my feelings on jumpsuits and I’m utterly excited to see one of my fashion idols, JLaw, rocking such a sleek black version. Hers featured a plunging neckline, a loose fit and a cinched waist (thanks to a wide metallic gold belt), but the excitement didn’t end there. Jen continued the black and gold theme with a matching clutch, patterned pumps and some gold jewelry. The final verdict?

Kurt Cobain’s Fashion Choices Were Never About What To Wear, But Rather How To Wear Items On Hand

13 May

There is undeniably something about the nature of the inexpensive materials – denim, flannel, canvas plimsolls – that Cobain and co. mixed and layered, chosen for no other reason that they were the ones at hand. They happen to resonate as the modest, everyday emblems of an honest day’s blue-collar work. Bruce Springsteen’s white T-shirt, bandana and 501s might know a little something about that recurring appeal: A few years ago, a reprise of workwear was dandified and billed as heritage menswear; currently, the Normcore trend appropriates everyday jeans and tees. A 1992 feature in Vogue was one of the first magazines to use the word grunge in a fashion context, and became just another cultural moment in the history of sulky teens (1960s Youthquake, 1970s punk) to mis-remember and commodify.

I think it has to come from the purest place of creative talent that needs a platform that needs to be seen and heard, says Mallis, speaking after an industry luncheon on Thursday ahead of the runway shows this weekend. Instagram Is Both A Positive And A Negative Presence In Fashion | StyleBlazer

From behind-the-scenes shots of a designers showroom to what Zac Posen had for dinner to up-to-the second accounts of a runway show during Fashion Week, theres barely a moment left unsnapped by the fashion set. Both a positive and negative force, this Instagram overdrive is affecting the fashion industry in significant ways, says Matthew Schneier in The New York Times . Not only does Instagram offer a platform over which designers can directly communicate with their fan base to share inspiration about the brand that might not get seen elsewhere, but the ease and speed with which information about collections is disseminated across the entire digital landscape is fundamentally changing the game. How many times during fashion week did you refresh your Instagram account to see the latest photos from a show? Five, 10, 20? Designers know they have to make the appeal of their collections shine through digital platforms now, which is starting to come through in the clothes.

It certainly seems like it from the marketing blitz that has blown up around the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival , which begins this weekend in Indio. We all know that brands have been flocking to the festival for years, hoping to make an impression on tastemakers who attend by hosting star-studded parties at nearby venues. This year, Old Navy , Lacoste , H&M , Teva , Adidas Originals , Guess and Opening Ceremony are just a few of the names on the Coachella branding bandwagon.
