In October, Gucci posted its weakest quarterly growth in four years, withoverexpansion in China being pointed to as one reason. Rumors abounded in Europe about this over the past summer, with names being floated as possible new Gucci creative directors. One name heard often and loudly was Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, who has been considered one of fashion’s top talents for years and, we hear, has been at least approached for the position.

Meanwhile, Conde CEO Charles Townsends released his state of the company year-end e-mail and conceded that 2014 was challenging. Figuring out exactly how challenging it was is hard to say, but it was clearly a down year. Sources say only two of the magazines reported ad-page gains: Conde Nast Traveler and Glamour. Web traffic is apparently surging and digital is approaching 20 percent of overall revenue.

Based on sales performance, some such as Louis Vuitton and Hermes appear to have done a better job than Gucci at rebuilding or supporting their exclusive image. They also mention lack of innovation, which affects brand desirability and ultimately investor sentiment and growth prospects.
